Eye on Earth Partnership with European Environment Agency
In 2008, Microsoft embarked on a pioneering five-year alliance with the European Environment Agency to deliver real-time environmental information to more than 500 million Europeans. The Eye on Earth Water Watch portal is the first step in delivering environmental information to more than 500 million citizens across Europe.

EEA Harnesses Microsoft Technology to Provide Timely Accurate Environmental Information to European Governments and Citizens (White Paper)
The European Environment Agency (EEA) is an agency of the European Union, tasked with collecting environmental data across 32 European countries (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey) and providing an independent source for environmental information. This information supports EU institutions and EU governments in making informed decisions about improving the environment, integrating environmental considerations into economic policies and moving towards sustainability.

Microsoft, the Clinton Foundation, ICLEI (Local Governments for Sustainability), and the Center for Neighbourhood Technology are creating a free software plus services application for cities to measure, track, and improve their Greenhouse Gas emissions., and collaborate and share best practices.

Microsoft Research’s European lab, in Cambridge, UK, is playing a key role in MSR’s work to develop novel computational tools and methods to predict and mitigate the rapid changes occurring in the earth’s life support systems.

Developed with Microsoft technology, EcoDrive is the world’s first device that interacts directly with drivers and can help them change their driving habits in ways that can reduce auto emissions.
 
Microsoft Dynamics AX and its integrated Environmental Sustainability Dashboard.
Microsoft’s Business Intelligence solution enables organizations to build custom scorecards to analyze, monitor and plan their Environmental Sustainability initiatives. From 2009, small and medium-sized businesses can measure and manage their carbon footprint from greenhouse gas emissions using  using Microsoft Dynamics AX and its integrated Environmental Sustainability Dashboard.

It's estimated that IT represents at least 2 per cent of all global carbon emissions (Gartner), and it's growing. To combat this, Microsoft is working with the IT industry to help to reduce that figure, by reducing our carbon footprint and water consumption, improving management of waste, and increasing the energy efficiency of our products and working practices.
